$20K in Grants Received for Music Scholarships

02/16/2012

Two of the region's important funders have awarded the Community Music Center Inc. with grants for need-based schoarships to children for music lessons at the Center.  The  Herbert Templeton Foundation and Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust have given a total of $20,000 this year to CMC Inc., the non-profit support organization for the Community Music Center.

CMC Inc. relies on donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations to fund the amount needed yearly for tuition subsidy, keeping the cost of lessons low for everyone, and providing scholarships for those who otherwise could not afford the already-low fees at CMC.  These grants make up about twenty percent of the total amount raised by CMC Inc. each year.

Need-based scholarship applications have risen three-fold in the last five years as families have struggled to meet the cost of living in the weak local economy.  Both the Templeton and Tucker foundations have assisted CMC Inc. with similar amounts in previous years; the dollars are awarded through competitive applications each year.

The Community Music Center is a Portland Parks & Recreation facility in partnership with the non-profit CMC Inc.
