Bravo to these CMC graduates and award-winners for the school year 2021-22!

Graduates

Kiave Rodríguez was introduced to piano at CMC in 2011 and has continued studying for 11 years. He also studied viola under the direction of Dr. Lisa Zweben for two years and participated in the CMC String Orchestra with teacher Margaret Murer. Kiave is graduating from Rex Putnam High School, where he participated in Chamber Orchestra, earning a varsity letter. He has been selected to participate in programs with the Oregon Music Education Association the Oregon Chapter of the American String Teacher Association, too. Outside of music, he earned the Seal of Biliteracy Award (Spanish language), was in the Rotary Exchange Program in Ecuador. His love of film and screen writing is leading him to the Film program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts this fall.

Jimmy Tran is graduating from Franklin High School as an Honor Roll student, National Honor Society member, and participant of the Advanced Scholars Program. He’s studied piano for 10 years, initially with Zita Jefferson and then with Ellen Godula. Jimmy enjoys martial arts, swimming, and playing sports, and has also studied clarinet, flute and sax. He’s looking forward to majoring in biology at the University of Portland staring this fall.

Inessa Zavalina has been studying violin and piano concurrently for 4 years in the Rosewood Music Program, and violin for three years before that. Her instructors have included Hong Chou, Jennifer Estrin, Sebastien Eichvalds, and Margaret Currell. She goes from Rex Putnam High this year to the Dentistry program at Portland State University this fall. She also enjoys singing, art, and sports including swimming, water polo, and pole vaulting.

About the Awards

Marian Swartz was a long-time administrative director at CMC. John L. Judge was an important volunteer at CMC, and Dorothea Lensch was Portland Parks first Recreation Director under whom the Center’s program was established. Mildred Berthelsdorf was a community volunteer who worked to promote young voice students. Mary Margaret Dundore was the director of the Francis Street Singers at CMC for many years. These memorial awards above are funded by a permanent endowment at the Oregon Community Foundation. Director’s List students are youth who’ve done note-worthy work in lessons and/or classes. All awardees are nominated by their instructors. Dr. Louis & Dr. Annette Kaufman were long-time friends of CMC and influential musicians (violin and piano, respectively).
