Awardees are nominated by their instructor(s) and selected by the Director. Awards are given in memory of individuals who were important to the Center’s history, and include small cash gifts. Marian Swartz was a long-time administrative director at CMC. John L. Judge was a volunteer at CMC, and Dorothea Lensch was Portland Parks first Recreation Director under whom the Center’s program was established. Mildred Berthelsdorf was a community volunteer who worked to promote young voice students. Mary Margaret Dundore was the director of the Francis Street Singers at CMC for many years. These memorial awards are funded by a permanent endowment at the Oregon Community Foundation.

The Louis & Annette Kaufman Music Achievement Award at the Community Music Center is a prize of $2,000 for a violin or piano student, initiated and perpetuated by a gift from the Kaufman estate as an annual award until the bequest is depleted. Louis & Annette Kaufman supported CMC for many years; their unique history is captured in the book Fiddler’s Tale, available in the CMC reference library.
