Finale, May 14: Garbot - Popadiuk - Kim Trio
The Garbot-Popadiuk-Kim Trio features three of the region’s top, award-winning teen Classical musicians: violinist Brandon Garbot, cellist Boris Popadiuk, and pianist Eloise Kim. The program includes selections from Trio No. 1 in B Major by Johannes Brahms, Trio No. 2 in C Minor by Felix Mendelssohn, Partita No. 2 in D Minor for violin by J.S. Bach, Sonata for violin by Poulenc, piano Polonaise-Fantaisie in A-flat major by Chopin, and Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major by J.S Bach.
Brandon Garbot is 16 years old and a sophomore at Southridge High School in Beaverton. He began the violin at seven and currently studies with Clarisse Atcherson at the Community Music Center. Following his debut with the Oregon Symphony in 2008, he has performed as soloist with the Portland Columbia Symphony, the Olympia Symphony Orchestra, the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, the Brevard Music Center Orchestra, and the Portland Youth Philharmonic. He was a recipient of the Young Artist Fellowship from Chamber Music Northwest in 2008, and was chosen as a Young Artist for the Starling-Delay Violin Symposium at Juilliard. He studied at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina during the summers of 2008 and 2009, twice serving as the concertmaster of the Transylvania Symphony Orchestra. He served as the concertmaster of the Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) from 2006-2009 and he is currently a violinist with the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra. He is a two-time winner of the PYP Concerto Competition and has also won the Oregon ASTA Concerto Competition, the Jefferson Symphony Young Artist Competition, and was one of three finalists in the 2009 ASTA National Soloist Competition. He has appeared on NPR’s nationally syndicated program From the Top.
This summer Brandon will study at the Perlman Music Program in New York as one of 35 students. He has also been accepted into the pre-college Young Artist Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music where he will begin studying with Cleveland Orchestra concertmaster William Preucil this fall.
Boris Popaduik is 17 years old CMC student and a senior at the Portland Waldorf High School. He currently studies with CMC instructor John Hubbard. He was the recipient of Chamber Music Northwest’s Young Artist Adjunct Fellowship for the 2007-2008 season and has played for numerous world renowned cellists, including Janos Starker, Alban Gerhardt, Ralph Kirshbaum, Bernard Greenhouse and Fred Sherry. He has also played in chamber music master classes for such celebrated artists as Ani Kavafian, Lawrence Dutton and Opus One.
Principal cellist of the Portland Youth Philharmonic from 2006 to 2008, Popadiuk was awarded 2nd prize in the orchestra’s Annual Solo Competition in 2006, and performed the first movement of Haydn’s Cello Concerto no. 1 with the Portland Youth Conservatory Orchestra in 2007. In 2008, he placed 1st in the OMEA State Solo and Ensemble Competition. In May of 2008 he recorded for NPR’s “From the Top” as a member of a clarinet quintet with David Shifrin. Boris will attend the Oberlin Conservatory at Oberlin College in the fall where he will study with Darrett Adkins.
Eloise Kim, 18 years old, was born in Seoul, Korea. She is a senior at Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton, Oregon. She started the piano at the age of 6½ and currently studies with Dr. Jean-David Coen. She has received numerous honors, including 1st Prize at Pinault International Piano Competition where she performed at Carnegie Hall at age 11, 3rd prize at the Lennox International Piano Competition, Special Director’s Prize at the Kingsville International Piano Competition, 1st prize at the Jefferson Symphony Young Artist International Piano Competition, 1st prize at the World Piano Pedagogy Conference Most Wanted Piano Competition, and finalist at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. She has been selected as one of the very few scholarship recipients of the prestigious Chopin Foundation of the US for the past three consecutive years and was also one of the Chamber Music Northwest Young Artist Fellows for 2007-2008.
Eloise has performed solo with the Vancouver Symphony as the winner of the Vancouver (USA) Symphony Young Artist Competition, performing Chopin’s Concerto No. 11 at age 13. She was also invited to perform the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Columbia Symphony in October 2007, and then in March 2009, she performed the Beethoven 4th concerto with the Jefferson Symphony (Colorado) as their young artist winner. Eloise will attend The Colburn School of Music in the fall.
